What is it with Twitter?

Having studiously avoided Twitter up to this point, concerned with becoming weary of technological and information overload, I'm taking a second look at the potential and pitfalls of Twitter. Although an early adopter on a lot of things, the fundamental question of "why?" must be answered first for me to adopt anything, early or late.
